The Kiota
from "The Orthodox Companion"
by Rev. David F. Abramtsov
The kiota is usually a small corner of the home facing the east is set aside for the family Sanctuary. Here will be found the Icons of Our Saviour, the Theotokos and Patron Saints of the family, the Holy Cross, a prayer book and the Holy Bible, the blessed palms or willows, blessed candles, Holy Water of Theophany and other sacred objects. A vigil light is kept burning here as a symbol of the family's warm faith and devotion. Here it is that the family is led in prayer by the parents, who read from the prayer book and Scriptures. Here it is that young and old kneel or stand in corporate worship -- joined sometimes by their neighbors and friends.
