Disney Dumps "Dogma"
NewsMax - April 9, 1999

The movie "Dogma", which was to be distributed through Disney's Miramax studios, is bound to offend even the least devout Christians, with a script that satirizes the Immaculate Conception, has Christ's descendant helping out in an abortion clinic, and even portrays several of the Apostles as drug dealers.

Dogma stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock and, playing the role of God, Alanis Morrisette.

Affleck, a fallen angel in Dogma, admits the flick pushes the envelope.

Mr. Showbiz reported, "In Affleck's words, the film offers the notion that 'Mary and Joseph had sex, and they had a kid, and therefore there's a [female] descendant of Christ on earth who works at an abortion clinic.' The subject matter, he said, is 'definitely meant to push buttons. There are clearly things about it that will be incendiary.'"

Dogma won't have the Disney seal of approval, because Disney Chief Michael Eisner is worried about bottom-line implications for his company. Disney has already been a target for Christian groups upset with Disney's perceived anti-Christian bias.

Still, Disney's honchos at Miramax, co-chairs Bob and Harvey Weinstein, seemed to be undeterred in making the blasphemous flick a success.

"We intend to work with a distributor that shares our vision of the film," Harvey Weinstein told the New York Times. The Times reported that the Weinsteins had purchased the distribution rights for the film.

Kevin Smith, the film's director, who describes himself as a practicing Catholic, said the film is "from first to last always intended as a love letter to both faith and God Almighty."

Too bad the film's star, Affleck, didn't see it that way.

Nor did many Christian groups.

A Thursday press release from the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights quotes Catholic League president William Donohue as saying, "Michael Eisner made the right move to dump Dogma. As a result, the Catholic League will not target Disney."

On Monday, Donohue told Inside Cover that he would take on Eisner and Co. over Dogma much the same way he had over the TV show Nothing Sacred, which ran on Disney-owned ABC last year. After organizing a boycott of 37 corporate sponsors, Donohue succeeded in getting the sitcom yanked from the small screen.
